1988 Was granted a full membership in the South African Academy for Science and Arts
1991 Receive a Prestige Award for Painting from the Federation of South African Culture.
1991 An Honorary Doctorate (D Phil) was awarded by the University of Potchefstroom
1999 An Honorary Doctorate (D Litt et Phil) from RAU University

The artist Bettie Cilliers-Barnard died early this morning in her home in Menlo Park, Pretoria. She was 95. She had long been extremely fragile and bedridden.
She leaves two children, - Wimcar and Jana - and four granddaughters and six great-grandchildren.
Cilliers-Barnard was a celebrated artist, who was both nationally and internationally acclaimed. She began painting in the late 1930's, and is famous for her colorful abstractions and large canvases with birds in flight.
